Hero

One of the people who inspired me to go to upstate New York for four years was Joseph Campbell. Writer, author extraordinaire, mythologist, historian, researcher, and consummate creative mind. Whenever I feel my artistic well run "dry," I try to turn to his writings for some ideas.

I have my first "Magic Flute" to conduct in April, 2016, and I have always been a little perplexed by this piece. Is it for kids or adults? Is it what Mozart really wanted to write (I think the answer is YES)? How Masonic is it? How Biblical?

I watched a TedEd talk about Joseph Campbell's research on myth, and found it remarkable. It illuminated some things about "Magic Flute."

You can view it here (http://ed.ted.com/lessons/what-makes-a-hero-matthew-winkler).

I'm off to my own journey with my husband (vacation and a wedding!). Hopefully our final "status quo" will be more relaxed than when we are leaving, after a very full month (year?).
